Yesterday, we mentioned that we've been noticing recent versions of Firefox, including 3.0.5, have exhibited the memory leak problems that used to plague Firefox 2. We are noticing this on both Windows XP SP3 and Vista SP1. We'd also noticed that systems where the add-on Tab Mix Plus was installed, did not appear to exhibit the same memory leak. Today, we uninstalled Tab Mix Plus (reluctantly, because we like it) from one system. On that system, the memory use pattern has changed, perhaps moderated, though we're not sure the leak has gone away. It now appears to be slower than in our tests yesterday, and from time to time, something in Firefox does clean up parts of memory from time to time. In one test, we had two Firefox windows open with seven tabs open in one of them, a dozen in the other -- a pretty full slate. Task Manager is showing us that Firefox grabs memory in one-megabyte chunks per second, for about a minute at a time, and then leveling back out to about 300,000 KB. So if it's not a leak right now, at least it's a fight, and we'll let you know what else we find. Więcej

One of the biggest problems when it comes to running Windows on netbooks has to do with the type of storage medium the cheaper models prefer: solid state drives. SSDs need to be treated differently from normal, mechanical hard drives because SSDs don't like small write and delete operations. For Windows 7, Microsoft promised performance improvements when using SSDs, so the guys and girls at TweakTown decided to do a preliminary benchmark between Windows Vista SP1 and the Windows 7 beta. Microsoft has released the Windows 7 SDK beta. "The Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1: BETA provides the documentation, samples, header files, libraries, and tools (including C++ compilers) that you need to develop applications to run on Windows 7 BETA and the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. To build and run .NET Framework applications, you must have the corresponding version of the .NET Framework installed. This SDK is compatible with Visual Studio 2008, including Visual Studio Express Editions, which are available free of charge." Przyszedł w końcu czas na test długo wyczekiwanego systemu Windows 7 w wersji Beta 1 (build 7000). Jest to pierwsza kompilacja Beta 1, natomiast w najbliższym czasie Microsoft wyda build 7012, który to będzie oficjalną testową wersją Windows 7 Beta 1. I'm sure you're all still (sadly) familiar with the recent 'debate' I had with InfoWorld's Randall Kennedy, which detailed a lot of silly things. The seed of that discussion was planted with Kennedy's first article which, among other things, claimed that Windows 7 performed similarly to Windows Vista (meaning, slower than XP). Leaving the thread count discussion behind, Kennedy did include a benchmark which showed that Windows 7 performed similar to Windows Vista. There's a new benchmark out now, comparing a slightly more recent build of Windows 7 to Vista RTM/SP1 and XP SP3, and in these tests, Windows 7 blows all of those out of the water. Więcej

One of the common problems when Windows Vista was released was that of missing or non-working drivers. Microsoft massively reworked many of Windows' internal systems and frameworks, meaning lots of drivers broke, with most of them needing major work, and some even needed to be rewritten completely. Apparently, Microsoft didn't communicate this well enough with its hardware partners - or the partners were lazy, who knows - because many devices failed to work with Vista during its early months of being out in the wild. Microsoft is trying to keep this story from repeating itself, saying that everything that works on Vista should work on Windows 7. Pobraliśmy i zainstalowaliśmy dodatek Service Pack 1 dla Windows Vista. System działa zdecydowanie szybciej, a praca w zaktualizowanym środowisku stała się o wiele przyjemniejsza. Mamy jednak pewien problem i nie wiemy jak go rozwiązać. Nie posiadamy stałego dostępu do Internetu, więc nie możemy odnaleźć stosownej solucji choćby w forach dyskusyjnych.  Więcej
